Jylian Gustlin · California
Code taught her systems.
Painting taught them to breathe.
The artist
Jylian Gustlin's work lives at a rare intersection: the procedural intelligence of technology and the physical intuition of paint.
A native Californian shaped by the technology explosion of Silicon Valley, Gustlin studied computer science and mathematics at San Jose State University before earning a BFA in Design and Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
She later worked as a graphics programmer, bringing an understanding of digital layering into a materially rich studio practice. Oil, acrylic, charcoal, wax, graphite, pastel, resin, and gold leaf are painted, scratched, obscured, and reopened.
Figures remain central, often poised in atmospheric, almost alien landscapes. Alongside them, the Fibonacci and Entropy series explore how mathematics, nature, order, and transformation inhabit the same living world.
“A painting can carry the logic of a system and still remain entirely alive to touch, accident, memory, and change.”The Fibonacci World · studio note
