Press Overview

San Francisco Bay Area artist whose layered abstractions are influenced by data, code, and classical forms, Jylian Gustlin creates works that live between structure and intuition. This page is intended as a resource for journalists, curators, writers, and collaborators seeking background information, images, and video materials.

Short Bio

Jylian Gustlin is a San Francisco Bay Area artist whose layered abstractions are influenced by data, code, and classical forms. Raised in California and shaped by the innovative and technological culture of the region, she merges traditional techniques with contemporary digital sensibilities. Her mixed-media paintings often explore systems, pattern, and the human figure, balancing mathematical structure with gestural, intuitive mark-making.

Extended Bio

Rooted in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jylian Gustlin’s practice is informed by the visual languages of both classical art and contemporary technology. Growing up alongside Silicon Valley’s rapid evolution, she became fascinated by how data, algorithms, and code can mirror human complexity. Her paintings frequently draw from sequences, numerical systems, and geometric structures, which she layers with expressive brushwork, rich color, and textured surfaces.

Working primarily in mixed media, Gustlin often incorporates materials such as fabric, collage, and digital references into her paintings. Many of her works sit at the threshold between figuration and abstraction, suggesting bodies, movement, or emotional states without fully resolving into literal representation. This tension between order and chaos, control and spontaneity, is central to her visual language.

Over the course of her career, Gustlin’s work has been exhibited in galleries and collections across the United States and abroad. Her paintings have resonated with viewers drawn to their layered complexity and the way they bridge the worlds of art, science, and technology. She continues to live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area.

HUMANITY Project & Social Impact

In addition to her studio practice, Jylian Gustlin has created work that engages with social and humanitarian themes. One such initiative is the HUMANITY project, which focuses on issues of displacement and refuge. Through this body of work, Gustlin uses layered abstraction and figurative suggestion to reflect on the complexity, vulnerability, and resilience of people forced to leave their homes.

The project invites viewers to consider the human stories behind statistics and headlines, emphasizing empathy and connection. It also reflects Gustlin’s broader interest in how art can serve as a bridge between data, narrative, and lived experience.

HUMANITY: Visual Selections

These works from the HUMANITY project reflect on displacement, refuge, and the fragility and resilience of the human condition. They are representative examples; additional images and high-resolution files are available on request.

Suggested placement: Add 2–4 images from the HUMANITY series here using Image or Gallery blocks.

Artist Statement (For Press Use)

My paintings are built from layers of information: numerical sequences, geometric frameworks, fragments of code, and traces of the human figure. I am fascinated by the way systems—whether mathematical, technological, or anatomical—can both reveal and obscure our inner lives. In my work, I use structure as a starting point and then disrupt it through gesture, texture, and color.

Working in mixed media allows me to move between precision and improvisation. I often begin with an underlying grid, pattern, or sequence and then respond intuitively, allowing the painting to evolve through addition, erasure, and reconfiguration. The resulting images hover between abstraction and figuration, suggesting movement, emotion, and memory without fully resolving into a single narrative.

Ultimately, I am interested in how we navigate complexity—both within ourselves and in the world we have built through technology and data. My paintings aim to create a space where these forces intersect, offering viewers a visual experience that is both analytical and deeply human.
